Supporting mental health in Scotland

Crisis

When people have mental health difficulties, early intervention is important. So RBS Social & Community Capital is proud to support Crisis, a charity that provides counselling services to children, adolescents and adults.

Early intervention counselling support by Crisis has helped more than 36,000 people since the charity was set up in 1996.

Clients range from children who are struggling to cope with bullying at school to adults affected by stress, abuse, domestic violence and bereavement.

People are referred to Crisis by their GPs, social workers and community mental health teams, and they can self-refer. Crisis has an average of 1500 referrals each year, many of them young people aged 16 and under.

The charity’s 93 highly trained therapists – most of them volunteers – are carefully matched to clients, and everyone who comes to Crisis can see a therapist for as long as necessary.

Counsellors offer a range of specialisms including trauma and major incident, cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred counselling and holistic therapies. These services are at the Crisis centres in Erskine and Paisley, in the workplace or sometimes via home visits. Crisis also provides counselling placements to counsellors doing Diplomas in Counselling, and many of them continue to support the organisation when they are qualified.

Crisis Chief Executive Jean Cumming says it’s often been hard to keep the door open, particularly during the recession, when organisations ring-fenced their funding, leaving charities very vulnerable. Thankfully, she says, S&CC had the faith to carry on funding.

S&CC has supported Crisis since it was set up and the £30,000 funding provided is now helping to secure and extend their services.

A new log-cabin style building will be under construction in 2016, from which Crisis will be able to see clients, train volunteers and deliver counselling using online services to clients across Scotland and the UK.

Clients agree that it’s a real lifeline. ‘It’s a pretty amazing place’, says one man, who has received life-changing, on-going therapy and support from Crisis.
