Case study: Westmorland
True to their name, Westmorland are a Cumbrian company who have made a business out of bringing a local, community focus to motorway services.
Their service areas are designed to fit within the surrounding landscape, they source products locally, and they maintain close links with communities through employment and charitable support.
They’re behind community in a big way, so we’re proud to be backing their major Gloucester project with a £27m development deal.
The new Gloucester northbound services has been a landmark development for the group; the site has been constructed sensitively to take the landscape into consideration, with a grass roof covering both the main amenity building and the petrol forecourt. It features a 300-cover restaurant, take-away food counter and farm shop.
And thanks to our partnership, Westmorland has now begun construction of the southbound services. Due for completion in summer 2015, the total Gloucester site will create 300 new jobs ‒ taking the firm’s headcount to approximately 800. The project has close charitable links with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust and will donate a percentage of its profits – an estimated £10 million over 20 years – to spend on community projects.
That’s a story we’re proud to be part of.
